The story we carry
Aceh: where the ocean
meets a living heritage.
Our story, across two homesAt Sumatra’s northern tip, Aceh looks out across the Indian Ocean. For centuries, its ports connected people, languages and ideas through trade. Banda Aceh, its capital, remains a meeting place of history and everyday life.
Faith is woven into this story. Aceh is known as “Serambi Mekkah,” the Veranda of Mecca, a name reflecting its long Islamic heritage. Timber houses raised on posts, richly patterned clothing and rhythmic group performances give that heritage a distinctive expression.
Here in Vancouver, those connections find new life: in a shared Eid meal, a young performer learning Ratôh Jaroe, or a family gathering to mark the Islamic calendar. Our home has changed; our sense of belonging travels with us.
